The ways to memorialize a loved one are countless depending on your desires and wishes. Woodlawn Cemetery will refer families to monument companies with whom they work. We encourage you to contact these businesses to determine with which one you feel more comfortable working. Woodlawn Cemetery will coordinate with the monument company and will install a foundation base for your monument or marker. In most cases the monument companies will factor in the cost for a foundation base from Woodlawn Cemetery within their proposals. We work closely and collectively with the monument companies to reduce any chance of error.

Flat Markers are flush with the ground and are most often made of granite. Single markers are commonly found in Sections J & M within the cemetery grounds of Woodlawn. The standard size for a single flat marker measure is 24 x 12 inches. If you are looking for a double flat marker the standard size is 36 x 12 inches.

Raised Markers rise up above the ground level on the top edge and slope down towards the bottom edge. The standard size for a raised marker is 24 x 16 inches.

Headstones are grave markers that stand above the level of the gravesite. Usually the markers are 6-8 inches thick and set on a concrete foundation base.

Monuments are usually very large headstones that can be sculptural, obelisk or another personal representation of the person or family memorialized. You will see numerous monuments throughout your visit to Woodlawn Cemetery. These monuments reveal a little bit about the character or story of the individual or family who is buried at that location.

All monument companies will schedule a time to meet with you. One of the first questions they will ask you is what determine cemetery you are working with and whether you know what the cemetery allows for markers. The monument company will ask how many gravesites you have and whether or not your intentions are to have all the markers to be similar in appearance. Another question you will be asked is if you have a particular marker in mind. They actually do a good job of navigating the conversation to determine your family’s desires and hopes.

Presently, burial lots are available for sale primarily in Sections M and East Addition at Woodlawn Cemetery. When a lot or gravesite has been purchased the owner will be given a recorded deed and sales receipt indicating the amount and location of the gravesite. The office will also maintain a record of all of the transactions for Woodlawn.

Lot owners will be part of the non-profit organization and are encouraged to attend the annual lot owners meeting every May at Woodlawn Cemetery. If a lot owner has a change of heart and desires to sell back or gift the purchased interment site, they will need to contact Woodlawn Cemetery to inform them of their intentions. The cemetery will only recognize the original lot owner or oldest heir in the family as the rightful owner of any previous transactions. We require a notarized letter from the lot owner or oldest heir in the family for any changes with ownership or designations for interments.
